New "Ask NE GAPNA Members" Question
Posted over 9 years ago by Elizabeth Esstman
During NE GAPNA presentations to students at UMass Lowell and Regis college, the following questions were asked:
1) What can a new graduate expect for mentoring in a first job?
2) I am concerned about working as an NP alone in a SNF and wondering what advice you can give?
Please take a moment to offer insight to future NPs working with older adults.

Unfortunately, there is a wide range of differences in the amount of mentoring one can expect. As a NP who also worked alone in a SNF, I took advantage of networking with other NPs from other practices. They were very helpful as they were dealing with the same kind of issues. I still do that 10 years later. If there is little mentoring in your first position, you can often find it through other avenues, such as GAPNA or through a previous preceptor
I agree with Ms. Frazier, it is so dependent on your place of employment. Prior preceptors, classmates, new colleagues, and even this "Ask NE GAPNA Members a Question" can all be valuable resources. Even seasoned practitioners see something new every week and have to ask questions and talk cases out with colleagues. Never be afraid to say "I don't know but I will find out". Most professionals and patients have respect for that.
